About This Site

What is Gnomes on the Roam?

Gnomes on the Roam is a free garden gnome finder and gift guide. We help you discover the perfect gnome through style quizzes, curated gift guides, care tips, an AI-powered gnome identifier, and links to the best gnome sellers online. Think of us as your gnome-obsessed friend who knows where to find everything.

Do you sell gnomes directly?

No. We are a recommendation and discovery site. When you find a gnome you like, we link you to trusted retailers like Amazon, Etsy, Wayfair, and eBay where you can purchase directly. All orders, shipping, returns, and customer service are handled by the retailer.

How do you make money?

We earn small commissions when you click our affiliate links and make a purchase on Amazon or other retailers. The price you pay is exactly the same — the retailer pays us a small referral fee. We also offer featured placement for gnome sellers in our directory. See our full Affiliate Disclosure for details.

Are your recommendations honest?

Yes. Commission rates never influence what we recommend. We regularly suggest buying from Etsy sellers and local shops where we may earn nothing. Our Gift Guide picks are based on what we'd actually give someone, not what pays the highest commission. If a recommended product has issues, we update or remove it.

Who runs this site?

Gnomes on the Roam is a property of StanHattie LLC, based in Des Moines, Iowa. You can reach us at hello@stanhattie.com.

Using the Site

How does the Gnome Finder work?

Select your preferred style, size, material, budget, and indoor/outdoor location. Click "Find Gnomes!" and we'll generate search links to Amazon, Etsy, Wayfair, and eBay with your criteria built into the search query. You'll see results tailored to exactly what you're looking for.

How does the Style Quiz work?

Answer 4 fun questions about your personality and garden style. Our algorithm matches you to one of 6 gnome personalities (Classic, Funny, Fantasy, Zen, Solar, or Custom) with shopping links to find your match. It's meant to be fun and surprisingly accurate.

How does the Gnome Identifier work?

Paste a gnome listing description or describe a gnome you've found. Our AI (powered by Claude) analyzes the description and tells you the gnome type, estimated material, approximate value, collectibility, and search terms to find similar ones. It's great for identifying yard sale finds or evaluating online listings.

Disclaimer: Value estimates are approximate and should not be relied upon as professional appraisals. The AI may make mistakes. Always do your own research before making purchasing decisions.

How does the Gift Guide work?

Pick an occasion (housewarming, birthday, retirement, etc.) and a budget range. We'll show curated gnome gift picks with links to buy them. Recommendations are updated seasonally and reflect what's currently available and well-reviewed.

Garden Gnome Questions

What material is best for outdoor garden gnomes?

Resin is the most popular choice — lightweight, weather-resistant, and holds paint well. Concrete is heavier and more traditional, great for windy areas. Ceramic has the most beautiful finishes but can crack in freezing temperatures. Wood is charming but best kept indoors or under cover. Metal (cast iron, copper) is durable but heavy.

How do I protect my gnome from weather damage?

Apply a UV-resistant outdoor sealant (like Rust-Oleum Clear Coat) every 1-2 years. Place gnomes on elevated surfaces to avoid standing water. Bring ceramic and wood gnomes indoors before winter. Clean with mild soap and a soft brush — never a pressure washer. See our Care Guide tab for detailed instructions and product recommendations.

What size gnome should I get?

Mini (under 6") — fairy gardens, shelves, desks. Small (6-10") — flower beds, planters. Medium (10-18") — classic garden size, front yards. Large (18-24") — statement pieces, porches. Giant (24"+) — yard focal points that make the neighbors talk.

Where can I buy unique gnomes?

Etsy is the best source for handmade and custom gnomes. Amazon has the widest selection. Wayfair carries premium outdoor decor. Local garden centers and craft fairs are great for one-of-a-kind finds. Check our Sellers tab for curated recommendations.

Are garden gnomes valuable? Can they be collectible?

Most mass-produced gnomes are worth $10-$60. However, vintage gnomes (especially German-made Gartenzwerge from the 1950s-1980s), artist-signed pieces, and limited editions can be worth $100-$1,000+. The most valuable gnomes are pre-WWII German ceramic pieces, which can sell for several thousand dollars. Use our Gnome Identifier to get a rough estimate.

Can I leave my gnome outside all winter?

It depends on the material. Concrete and resin gnomes can usually stay outside if properly sealed. Ceramic gnomes should always come inside — water gets into the porous material, freezes, expands, and cracks. Wood gnomes should come inside too. When in doubt, store in a garage or shed over winter.
